DESCRIPTION:Bytown Walkers Club de marche\nIs proud to present our fourth annual\n“Fall Classic” Race Walks 2025\n(featuring Athletics Ontario’s 20km Race Walk Championships) \nChanges for 2025:  Please note the new day – Sunday!  The bad news is that one of Lansdowne Park’s co-owners (with priority access) recently decided to schedule an activity on the Great Lawn on the date we had booked. The good news is that\, in compensation\, they offered us the Sunday\, the day we had always preferred. \nSunday\, September 21\, 2025                Lansdowne Park\, Ottawa \nLansdowne Park is a major entertainment and commercial venue not far from downtown Ottawa. The main access roads are Bank Street and Queen Elizabeth Driveway (along the Rideau Canal)\nSupport facilities:  Washrooms just inside the main (east) door of the Aberdeen Pavilion\, close to the start/finish line on the Great Lawn. Depending on the weather\, the registration and “Race HQ” will be either outside the door or in the small lobby inside.\nParking:      We recommend the large parking lot beneath the stadium (because above-ground parking on site is limited in quantity and in time). Access either from Bank Street or from Queen Elizabeth Driveway. If you park in the east of the lot\, the stairs will bring you up adjacent to the Great Lawn.\nThe “National Capital Race Walk Course”; a 1250m lap\, combining the Great Lawn and adjacent pathways\, courtesy of the City Of Ottawa and the National Capital Commission (NCC).\nSchedule: 09h00:  Start\, 20km\, 10km\, and High School Challenge (1250m)                                                                                                                                                  10h00:  Start\, 5km start\n(World Athletics (WA) judging for 20km and 10km. Common Sense Judging (CSJ) in the 5km only.  CSJ rules attached.)\nHigh School Challenge:  The High School Challenge is for teams of up to five athletes**. Team scoring is much the same as a cross-country race: the finishing positions of the top three on each team are added together\, with the lowest total winning. Ties in team scores are broken by the higher placing third athlete. Most visitors will enter the city on Highway 417. Take Exit 119 (Metcalfe Street). Then:                                             – if coming from the west\, continue straight along Isabella Street to Elgin Street.                  – if coming from the east\, make three right turns to go under the highway to Elgin Street.\nFrom Elgin\, turn right onto Queen Elizabeth Driveway and follow the Canal to Lansdowne. Access either from Queen Elizabeth Driveway or from Bank Street.\nIf you are coming across the river from Gatineau\, please note that your normal route to Lansdowne may be affected by road closures downtown because of a major road race.\nAccommodation:   Lansdowne Park is a major entertainment venue but it is not well served by hotels. While it is not far from downtown\, perhaps allowing for a pleasant warm-up/cool-down walk (no more than 3km) along the Rideau Canal\, note that a major road race is also being held on the morning of Sunday 21. The venues do not overlap\, but downtown hotel bookings may be at a premium – we recommend reserving sooner rather than later.\n***\n“Common Sense Judging” (CSJ) Rules \n(1) Walking is defined by unbroken contact with the ground:  one foot must be seen by the judges to be in clear contact with the ground at all times.  (“Clear contact” is when each foot is seen to remain on the ground as the body moves forward. In running\, the foot attempts to leave the ground immediately after contact.) \n(2) The leg is seen by the judges to be straight or significantly straightened\, at the knee when the foot touches the ground.  (In running\, the leg is bent at the knee when it hits the ground in order to provide the instantaneous drive back into the air. The absolutely straight leg of strict Race Walking is not required in “common sense” rules\, since it requires a skill that some need time to acquire. But everyone can try to straighten it.) \n(3) Above all\, the idea is to walk. Attempts to adapt jogging to this “common sense” definition look contrived\, are obvious to judges\, and will be penalized. Expected Finish Time of International Half Marathon Invitational: 8:57 a.m. (men)\, 9:05 a.m. (women) \nWhere: Santee\, CA – A World Athletics certified pre-verified 1.0 km course on Riverview Parkway and Town Center Parkway adjacent to the Trolley Square Mall at Santee Town Center\, with the start / finish on Town Center Parkway behind the Mall. \nTeam USA Selection & Qualifying Protocols: Following USATF team selection and qualifying protocols\, the USATF Marathon Race Walk Championships will serve as the selection event for Team USA for the 2026 World Team Race Walking Championships in Brasilia\, Brazil on April 12. Several of the favorites among the athletes expected to compete have local roots. \nWorld Athletics World Race Walking Tour Silver Label Event: This year’s Championships have once again been accepted as a World Athletics World Race Walking Tour Silver Label Event for the new Marathon and Half Marathon distances\, as well as the 10km and 5km distances. It is expected that several top male and female walkers from around the NACAC & South American areas will compete in an attempt to qualify for the World Team Race Walking Championships in Brazil and other international championships. Athletes may earn World Ranking Points in the Marathon\, Half Marathon\, 10km\, and 5km events. \nAdditional Events:  Open Marathon\, Half Marathon\, 10km\, and 5km race walks for U.S. and international men\, women and masters\, as well as youth 5km and 3km races. \nEntry Information – USATF Marathon Race Walk Championships & USATF Masters Half Marathon Race Walk Championships :  The USATF website for their open Marathon and Masters Half Marathon Race Walk Championships is: https://www.usatf.org/events/2026/2026-usatf-national-marathon-race-walk-championshi  Entries for the USATF Marathon and Masters Half Marathon Race Walk Championships will be due by Monday\, January 5\, 2026\, 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time.  The on-time entry fee will be $50 per individual. Athletes may pick up their competition bibs and timing tag on Saturday\, January 10 at a location to be determined or at the timing tent near the start line beginning at 6:00 a.m. race morning.  \nPrize Money: USATF Marathon Race Walk Championships: The prize structure at the USATF Marathon Race Walk Championships will be: M&W: 1st) $8\,000\, 2nd) $6\,000\, 3rd) $4\,000\, 4th) $3\,000\, 5th) $2\,000\, 6th) $1\,000\, 7th) $1\,000.  These funds are provided by USATF. Please note that in order to be eligible for the USATF National Championship prize money\, an athlete must be properly entered in the manner prescribed on the USATF website. Note: There is no unique\, dedicated prize money for the USATF Masters Half Marathon Championships. Performances there are eligible for World Athletics Race Walking Tour Silver Label Prize Money. \nWorld Athletics Race Walking Tour Silver Label Prize Money: International prize money for both men and women will be awarded based upon the World Athletics World Ranking performance points achieved for their results in the Marathon\, Half Marathon\, 10km\, and 5km races for men and women. This prize money will be awarded based upon the combined results of all the races: M&W – 1st) $2\,000\, 2nd) $1\,250\, 3rd) $1\,000\, 4th) $500\, 5th) $250.  To be eligible for the prize money the performances must be worth a minimum of 850 World Ranking performance points to qualify for the prize purse. The times equal to 850 World Ranking performance points at each eligible competitive distance are: Marathon – 3:52:37 (m)\, 4:15:47 (w); Half Marathon – 1:43:32 (m)\, 1:54:22 (w); 10km – 46:55 (m)\, 52:09 (w); 5km – 22:30 (m)\, 25:21 (w).
